São Vicente is small, dry and utterly magnetic. Almost everyone lives in Mindelo, a port city wrapped around one of the finest natural harbours in the Atlantic, where pastel Portuguese facades meet a distinctly Cape Verdean confidence.
Mindelo grew rich in the nineteenth century as a coaling station for steamships crossing between Europe, Africa and South America. Sailors from every ocean passed through Porto Grande, and the city has kept that cosmopolitan, open-door character ever since.
This is the intellectual capital of the islands. Poets and writers of the Claridade movement, who shaped modern Cape Verdean identity in the 1930s, gathered in Mindelo's cafes. Today the city hosts galleries, artisan markets, and a replica of Lisbon's Torre de Belém housing maritime archives.
Climb Monte Verde in the late afternoon and the whole island lays itself out below: the harbour crescent, the desert hills glowing amber, and on a clear day Santo Antão's wall of mountains across the channel.
